Understand the Politics

Given the current situation in this country, why would anyone want to become or remain a police officer? Although there are many reasons, there are usually two main reasons:

  1. The Law Enforcement Profession is an honorable profession and
  2. We like helping people.

Law Enforcement today, is more ethnically diverse, intellectually rich and professional than it was in 1975 when I started, or it ever was.  I can remember as a night shift Lieutenant, the local media outlets would call about 0530 hours every morning to see if something “juicy” went down.  If it wasn’t a rape, murder or other heinous crime, they didn’t want to hear about it.  Why?  Because that is what sells!!!  So, if you do something that really helps society or a person, don’t expect it to be on the front page of the Ledger.

Politicians blame poverty for rises in crime, then they institute programs and reforms to ‘fix’ the crime, and when these solutions don’t work, they blame the police.  It is a vicious cycle that the American public is sold every 4 years before election time.

There are many retired police officers, like myself, who would gladly, if we could, jump into a patrol car and stand shoulder to shoulder with you.  Because we know the service you provide is done in honor.  Never forget that You are the HONORABLE ones in our society.  Holding the thin blue line and watching the “six” of each other.  Stand firm, stand true, know that God is with you and we will all come out of this just fine!!

Right and Wrong

08/15/2020

Greetings to all.  I am considering this my first blog post as the previous one was simply to lay down some ground rules.

Thanks for tuning in. I hope you have checked out my “About” page so you know who I am and where I am coming from.  ‘Where I am coming from’ is an interesting concept.  Everyone is ‘coming from’ a different place.  We may have some similar experiences, similar likes and dis-likes, but everyone is different than the next person.  That is one reason I try very hard to not criticize another person, because I cannot understand exactly where they are coming from.   This is why our society has such a hard time nailing down right from wrong.  We have a very diverse society.  Diverse economic incomes, diverse educations, diverse ethnic groups, on and on it goes.  Our country is in the state it is because everyone has their opinion of what is right and what is wrong based on ‘where they are from’.  And various people have their own ideas as to how to make their opinion of right and wrong the rule of the land.

I invite you to share what your beliefs are regarding right and wrong, where we get that measurement from, and WHY you believe that to be true.  The WHY is very important.  If you are going to say your way is right because that is what you have been taught or that is what you believe without providing the ‘why’, then, possibly your way is not right.

Let us think!!!

Blog Introduction

08/15/2020

Well, this is just what we need. Another retired cop / chaplain trying to make a name for himself! Trying to convince us his way is best or that he knows everything!!!

Believe me, I struggled with that for some time. And I came to the conclusion that I could put my voice out there and if cops were interested, they could listen. If not, they would never again log into my site.

The good news is that I will never sell you anything on this site. That is not my purpose. My purpose of doing this blog is merely to encourage conversations that will help us through this journey we call life, as Law Enforcement Officers. Hopefully we can learn from each other, and maybe even help each other. I am definitely not one who likes to re-invent the wheel. If you have experience in a certain area and I do not, I can learn from you. If I have experience in a certain area of life and you don’t, maybe you can learn from me. I figure that all this grey matter is just going to go to waste when I die anyway, so why not share it?

I will let you know up front that I am a father of three adult girls, and have been married only one time, to my wife of 45 years. So I come to you with that kind of experience.

If you have a question, you can post it, and I will let you know if I have any knowledge / experience in that area. Possibly, someone else might.

GROUND RULES:

Any name calling or other hateful speech will not be permitted. If you want to tell me you disagree with me (or someone else’s post), that is one thing. You cannot call me or anyone else derogatory names because they don’t understand you or disagree with you. Any posts that are not civil or are defamatory will be removed. Don’t go off on a string of 10-codes since many agencies have different codes. If you state a position, give your reasons for your position. That way we can evaluate and discuss. Understood? Good. Now, let’s have some fun!!!
